Young film-makers go head-to-head in movie contest
Second year classes 2B and 2C have completed their film projects and posted their competing short films on YouTube. The 2B’s interpretation of the poem ‘4C Boy’ can be seen on their ‘Funky Zebras‘ blog page here; and goes up against the 2C’s interpretation of the poem ‘Mid-Term Break’ which can be seen on their ‘Tenacious C’s‘ page here. The winners will emerge from a thorough assessment system which involves viewing figures, a panel of judges selected from the teaching staff and an independent film expert.
Many congratulations to multi-talented Leaving Cert student Elga Kursite whose essay titled ‘The future of a Child Born Today in the Developing World’ has been chosen as one of ten to be included in the annual ‘Concern Writing Competition’ book, to be published soon by Liffey Press. Elga’s stirring piece – written to highlight the terrible plight of many in the developing world today – was chosen from over 800 entries coming from 37 countries around the world. Her much lauded article is a worthy showcase for her writing talents and can be read here.
Congratulations to LCI student Tara Farrell who has been awarded a two week internship at Vogue magazine, after her article ‘White Explosion’ was chosen from almost 30,000 entrants to a competition run by the magazine for budding fashion journalists from all over the UK and Ireland. The esteemed judging panel commented on the ‘astonishing’ standard of entries received and were ‘amazed’ by the quality of Tara’s effort – particularly given that she was one of the youngest entrants in the competition. The judges commented that her ‘obvious knowledge and understanding of fashion amazed our team at Vogue.’ As part of her prize, the Fashion Director at Vogue sent Tara an exclusive Alexander Wang gown, which was worn on the catwalks this season during fashion week in London, Paris, Milan and New York. This extraordinary achievement is a credit to Tara and her outstanding talent as both a fashionista and a writer. Well done to Tara, who clearly has a very bright (and glamorous!) future ahead. Well done to the brave and talented souls – brilliantly choreographed by Ms. Price – who performed Banagher College’s first ever flash mob in support of the ‘Na Seisiúr Daltaí’, who were advertising milk as part of their campaign for the final of the national ‘Milkit’ advertising awards.
Frantic preparations are being made by a group of second year students as they prepare for the grand final of the MIlkit National Advertising Awards. ‘Na Seisiúr Daltaí’ reached the final of this esteemed contest amid stiff competition from nearly one thousand entries from around the country. The team – along with three others from Banagher College – had previously qualified for the activation round and now find that they will have the chance to convince the judges In The Aviva Stadium next Tuesday that their innovative ad campaign for Milk is worthy of the All-Ireland title and the accompanying prize of an Apple ipad for each team member. The glitzy ceremony will see the team compete against five other teams from around the country in the grand final. The team of Emma Treacy, Louise Murray, Yvonne Ryan, Imelda Minnock, Ashton O’ Rourke and Padraig Troy will be accompanied on their trip to the spectacular new Aviva Stadium by Mr. O’ Brien and Ms. Price.

Congratulations to the four teams (Na Seisur Daltai,The Bumble Bees, Crazy Cow and The Milk Maids) from Banagher College who have overcome stiff competition to reach the next stage of the Milkit Awards national advertising competition. Their planned campaigns to promote dairy products among teenagers came in for much praise from the judging panel and we can look forward to seeing their activated campaigns around the school in the very near future.
